Bars and makers

Precious metal in bulk is called bullion: it is cast or struck into bars, wafers or coins. A bar's purity is given in thousandths: a .995 bar holds 995 parts of precious metal and 5 parts of other metal.

Heraeus makes minted platinum bars in four sizes: 1 ounce, 100 grams, 500 grams and 1 kilo, with a purity of 999.5. In September 2012 Valcambi brought out a platinum CombiBar: 50 grams that break into 50 small bars of 1 gram. Umicore makes investment bars from 1 to 5,000 grams.
