Buying guide

What do you get for your moneyand where do you pick it up?

Five questions, one answer. We do not say whether you should buy, but we do say what the cheapest way is to buy what you want, with shipping counted in.

an answer closes the question

How much do you want to spend in total, shipping included?

€

The amount drives the premium more than the shop does. In our range it makes a difference of a few percentage points: smaller pieces cost more per ounce to mint and package, and the shipping is spread over less metal.

Which metal do you want? The percentage is the premium: what you pay on top of the metal price. Not a return, this is what the purchase costs.

Only investment gold is exempt from VAT. On silver, platinum and palladium there is 21%, and you see that in every premium above.

For platinum and palladium the range is also thin, so "the cheapest" says less than it does for gold. More on that on the pages gold, silver, platinum, palladium.

In which country may the shop be based?

Within the EU nothing changes about tax. You pay the VAT of the shop's country; nothing is added at the border.

Have it delivered, or collect it yourself at a counter?

Collection is possible, but seldom around the corner. 12 shops have a counter, 2 of them in the Netherlands: Baarn en The Hague, Alkmaar en Rotterdam en Breda.

Shipping does not get cheaper by itself at a larger amount, as insurance counts too. If we do not know a shop's table, the answer says unknown, never free.

Must a particular payment method be available?

We know the payment methods of 10 of the 14 shops. For the others we do not know, and then we would rather not exclude them.

We cannot see what is actually offered at checkout. What the shop itself shows is what counts.

Important

Past performance predicts nothing. Figures over a long term show what happened, not what will happen. Precious metal pays no interest or dividend, and a euro return moves with the dollar rate.

This is not buying or selling advice. We sell nothing, do not broker and are not a party to your purchase. Whether this suits you we cannot know.

The premium comes on top of the metal price. What a price chart shows is the metal price; what a buyer is left with is that price minus the premium on purchase and minus the dealer's buying margin on sale.

Check price and stock at the shop itself. Our prices are a snapshot; what is on the shop's site is what counts, including shipping costs and availability.
