Background
Two companies with one name
The name Degussa comes from the founding of the Deutsche Gold- und Silber-Scheideanstalt formerly Roessler in Frankfurt am Main, in 1873. DEGUSSA is the abbreviation.
The old Degussa
In the 2000s Degussa AG divested its original core: precious metal processing. Degussa gives no year within the 2000s. According to the SEC filings, on 10 August 2001 OM Group took over all the businesses of dmc2 Degussa Metals Catalysts Cerdec AG, a subsidiary of Degussa AG, for about 1.2 billion euros. On 31 July 2003 OM Group completed the sale of its Precious Metals business to Umicore for 697 million euros.
Degussa today
In 2010 a private group acquired the right to use the name Degussa for precious metal trading and founded Degussa Sonne/Mond Goldhandel GmbH. According to Degussa itself, the present company has no operational link with the former Degussa AG, now Evonik Operations GmbH.
Degussa presents itself as a partner for certified investment bars and coins and precious metal services. By its own account it has 16 locations worldwide. Alexander Betz has been CEO of the Degussa Group since June 2026.
