Background

Origin and ownership

Heraeus is a German technology group from Hanau, founded in 1851 and one of the largest family businesses in Germany. The family began in 1660 with a pharmacy in Hanau-Neustadt. Heraeus Precious Metals has about 2,500 employees at 11 sites, from trading and products to recycling and refining.

The name on the bar is Heraeus, but the gold has come from Switzerland since 2018. After the full takeover of Argor-Heraeus in 2017, most of the gold refining was moved there. Gold from Hanau has been on the LBMA list as 'former' since the end of 2018, at Heraeus's own request, because the site no longer met the requirements.

History

Argor-Heraeus is a refinery in Mendrisio, Switzerland, founded in 1951. Since 1 July 2026, Argor-Heraeus has operated as an independent company within the Heraeus group.

Refining and LBMA

Argor-Heraeus is on the LBMA Good Delivery list for gold, first listed on 28 August 1961. By its own account it has been one of the seven global referees of the LBMA since 2003. Heraeus Ltd Hong Kong (Fanling) is also on the list for gold, since 23 January 2006. For silver, Heraeus Precious Metals in Hanau is on the list, since 1 June 1999.
