Background
Origin and ownership
Umicore is a Belgian materials technology company with its headquarters in Brussels. It is listed on Euronext Brussels (UMI).
History
The oldest predecessor begins in 1805, when Napoleon gave Jean Dony the Vieille-Montagne mine in Moresnet. Umicore itself was formed in 1989 by the merger of four mining and smelting companies. The name Umicore has existed since 2001. In 2003 Umicore bought the precious metals business of OM Group, the former precious metals branch of the German Degussa, for 697 million euros.
Refining and LBMA
The refinery is in Hoboken, Belgium. For silver, Umicore is on the LBMA Good Delivery list, first listed before 1934. It calls itself an Associate Member of the LBMA and a Good Delivery refinery for silver and gold. In June 2013 it was one of the first London Good Delivery gold refineries to pass the LBMA Responsible Gold audit.
Umicore calls itself the world-leading refiner of 17 different metals. Gold leaves the refinery as grains of 99.99% and as London Good Delivery bars of 12.5 kg, silver as granules of 99.99% and as bars of 25 kg. Platinum, palladium and rhodium come as powder of at least 99.95%.
