Background
Origin and ownership
Valcambi is a Swiss refiner and bar maker with its headquarters and refinery in Balerna, in the canton of Ticino. The company is wholly owned by Global Gold Refineries Ltd (GGR). GGR is 95% owned by REL Singapore and 5% by Rajesh Exports.
That was not always the case. In 2003 Valcambi was sold to European Gold Refineries, a shareholding of Newmont Mining and a group of Swiss investors. Before that it had been wholly owned by Credit Suisse since 1980, which had first taken 50% in 1967 and then a further 30%.
History
The company began in 1961 as Valori & Cambi, a refinery in Balerna built by five private Swiss investors. The name became Valcambi on 30 June 1967.
Refining and LBMA
Valcambi is on the LBMA Good Delivery list for gold, first listed on 20 May 1968, and for silver, first listed before 1972. It also says it is accredited for platinum and palladium by the LPPM, the London Platinum and Palladium Market.
