Background
Origin and owner
The Perth Mint is a trading name of Gold Corporation, which is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia. Gold Corporation was incorporated on 18 December 1987 and uses the trading names The Perth Mint and The Perth Mint Refinery.
The mint itself is older. It was founded as a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth, after lobbying of the British Government by the first premier of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest. The foundation stone of the building was laid in 1896.
History and purity
According to the mint itself, between 1899 and 1931 it struck more than 106 million gold sovereigns and nearly 735,000 half sovereigns. In 1957, in its own words, it made the purest gold plate of the time: almost six nines (999.99 parts per thousand), measured by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in London.
Refining and LBMA
Gold Corporation (T/A The Perth Mint) in Perth has been on the LBMA Good Delivery list since 24 January 2003, for both gold and silver. The mint also says it is one of the few global referees of the LBMA.
